One of my favorite things to do in South Africa is visiting the Shangana Cultural village. It was created and built by local Shangaan people, forming a place of great pride and a way of preserving their rich heritage. It's been a wonderful example of South Africa's cultural and diversity that continues to grow.
The Shangaan tribe was formed when Shaka the Zulu King decided to conquer the Tsonga tribe and sent out his warriors led by Soshangane to do so. Interestingly enough, Soshangane chose instead to set up a new tribe when he came upon some communities of peaceful villagers and noticed some land that's fertile. These people included members of the Tsonga tribe as well as Nguni.
The cultural village provides the community with local arts and crafts that tourists are welcome to pick up.
